When you don’t know what to do…
When you know what to do but it’s scary…
When you’re scared, overwhelmed or anxious…
When someone else is scared, overwhelmed or anxious…
When change is needed…
When change seems impossible…
When in conflict…
When in love…
When everyone’s looking to you…
When you feel entirely alone…
When you have too many options…
When you have no choice in the matter…
When danger surrounds you…
When moving toward your dream…
Just take the next small step.
This week
Not every move we make needs to be a giant leap. Most of them are small steps—even the ones that feel enormous in anticipation or become pivotal in retrospect.
Consider the direction you’re moving in, whether in work, life or a relationship. How much choice do you have about your next move? How much clarity? How much confidence?
Notice the tendency to think five moves ahead, to game out all possible outcomes. My, what a beautiful and brilliant brain you have.
Hold gently the part of you that foresees disaster in most of these outcomes. You might soften toward your fear or anxiety, which are doing their best to keep you safe.
Notice the tendency to make everything big—expectations, plans, strategies, fears.
Bring yourself back to where you are today. Ask yourself, What is the next small step?
For example:
Making a list
Making a call
Scheduling an important conversation
Finding a book/podcast for information/inspiration
Seeking a friend’s help
Do that thing.
Repeat.
In the comments: What big move are you making in your life or work? What’s the next small step? Is it helpful to break it down in this way? Is it helpful to write it down or share it with someone you trust?
Let’s celebrate the small steps each of us are making this week.
Note from Kristen:
Oh good, you’re still here. Real quick, it’s my birthday this week! Will you help me celebrate by sharing The Lead with your dream team, your closest colleague or your favorite leader? If you find it truly supportive, consider sharing a recommendation on your social channels. Wow. That would mean the world to me.
Thanks for reading and for leading in the big and small ways you do every day.
