The basics of leadership are:
Be clear about where we’re going
Be honest about where we are now
Be intentional about moving (individually and collectively) from 2 to 1
In this way leadership is simple, but not easy. Why is that? What is blocking us?
It’s our own innate complexity that makes it difficult. This is why leadership is always personal—it’s about who we are as a person even more than what we do as a professional. And who we are is usually a person aching for acceptance, approval and/or control.
Which makes it feel risky to do steps 1, 2 and 3.
Are we willing to do the internal, individual and personal work to recognize that we have not only an organizational gap but a personal gap to bridge between 2 (current state) and 1 (vision state)?
Are we committed to a vision so powerful our insecurities are no match for it?
Are we ready to embrace being a person-in-progress in order to lead others toward this vision?
