A meditation on meditation
I don’t know
how to let thoughts go
but I have learned
if I let them be
thoughts will let go of me.
If you think you aren’t supposed to have thoughts, you’re going to assume you’re failing when your mind is simply doing its job.
The practice of mindfulness is seeing the thoughts that arise and letting them be what they are, how they are.
When we can see our thoughts, and know they are thoughts—not reality, not facts, not truth—we realize we don’t need to change anything about them.
We have already changed our relationship to them.
We have changed ourselves.
Then (and only then) our thoughts loosen their grip. The old thoughts, no longer being fed by indulgence or resistance, fade away. Giving you the space to choose your new thoughts.
